A 16-year-old British transgender TikToker was found stabbed to death in a village park in broad daylight on Saturday, leading to the arrest of two teenagers.
Brianna Ghey, who had thousands of followers on the social media platform, was spotted by passers-by with multiple stab wounds at Linear Park in Warrington, Cheshire, around 3pm local time, BBC News reported.
Police detectives said they found no evidence Ghey’s murder was a hate crime related to her being a transgender girl.
The investigation led to the arrest of a boy and a girl, both aged 15, who are charged with murder.
Police said the suspects, who were not named, were from the Warrington area. You are in custody.
Detective Chief Superintendent Mike Evans said Ghey’s killing was a “targeted attack” but police are still trying to determine what prompted it.
“At this time there is no evidence that the circumstances of Brianna’s death are related to hate,” he said.
“Patrols in the area have been stepped up and officers will remain in the Culcheth area to provide security and address any local residents concerns.”
Evans urged anyone with information about the case, “no matter how big or small,” to come forward.
“We are also keen for people and businesses in the local community to review any CCTV or dashcam footage for anything that might assist our investigations,” he added.
In a statement released to the media, Ghey’s family members said her untimely death left a “massive hole” in her life.
“Brianna was a much loved daughter, granddaughter and little sister,” the statement said. “She was a larger than life character who would leave a lasting impression whatever she encountered. Brianna was beautiful, funny and hilarious. Brianna was strong, fearless and unique.”
Emma Mills, the principal of Birchwood Community High School, where Ghey was a student, said, “We are shocked and truly devastated to learn of Brianna’s death.”
